EOAT for In-Mold Labeling: Feasibility for Low Cavitation
By John M. Westbeld, Engineering Manager, SAS Automation, LLC
Often, In-Mold Labeling (IML) is centered on food packaging where higher cavitation and volume make it cost justifiable. Low cavitation IML applications are where the cost justification is tougher and are prevalent in the automotive, home appliance, and toy industries. Making low cavitation applications attractive to the IML process depends upon the automations ability to produce good parts in a cost effective manner.

A Powerful Way to Increase Dielectric Constant
By Rudolph D. Deanin, Professor, Plastics Engineering Dept., UMass Lowell
When we put a plastic insulator in an electric field, if it contains elements besides carbon and hydrogen, it has polar bonds, and these tend to orient in the electric field. If they are free enough to do so, this gives a high dielectric constant. In an alternating field, the polar groups try to follow the field. As we increase the frequency, the field alternates so fast that the polar goups lose the ability to follow it. In this transition region - dielectric loss - electricity turns into heat.

Apple's 1998 release of the iMac, an oft-cited touchstone of the new style consciousness, ushered in the idea of a machine that doubles as a piece of popular culture-sculpture. Now products feel underdressed in just a box.
